How to Get a Book Reviewed
If you would like to request that I review your book, please do the following:
- Look over the site and read a few reviews to get a sense of our aesthetic. Craft is paramount whether you write literary or genre fiction (is there a difference?). I’d like to give you a positive review, but I will always give an honest review. Think carefully about whether your book is a good fit for my reading list.
- If you think your book is a good fit, please email me with a request to review your book. Include your title, a one paragraph synopsis plus any info you think I might want to have. Except in special circumstances, I only read physical books. If I agree to read a PDF for you, please note that it will take me much longer to finish the book.
- Remember that politeness goes a long way. I am a writer too, and I recognize that you have poured your heart and soul into this project and are excited to tell the world. I love reviewing so much that I do it for free, but please keep in mind that I am taking time away from my writing (and family) to review your book, so please be considerate.
I’ll try to get back to you within a week’s time. I am not able to review all books and cannot promise when I will get your book reviewed. I am more generous when not reading under a strict deadline.
Non-Literary Inquiries
If your query is related to content marketing—asking me to speak, blog, or otherwise—please help me keep organized by contacting me at my work email instead. I can promise you the response will be faster, and more generous, than if I have to sort it out myself.
A Note on Impartiality
The literary community is sometimes a small one. There are only so many presses and many writers know each other. I do review books by friends and will always try to disclose when that is the case. I also review books published by presses where I dream of having my books published.
Impartiality and credibility are both important to me. I will do my very best to give you, dear reader, my unbiased opinion about books and never to lead you astray. Our tastes will sometimes differ, but you can trust that these reviews always constitute my honest reactions to the book at hand.
Regarding Payment
I sometimes receive free reading copies of books, but I accept no payments from authors or publishers for reviewing books.
As a member of the Partner Program at Powell’s Books, I do receive a commission if you purchase a book through a link on my site. These payments do not affect my impartiality and I would rather not review a book I hated than recommend a bad book to you. I participate in this program because it’s an easy way to 1) give you quick and easy access to great books, 2) support independent booksellers, and 3) pay for my own book buying habit and the costs of maintaining this site without adding obtrusive ads.
